Tamil Nadu govt announces 24 public holidays for 2024CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Friday released a list of 24 public holidays for government institutions and commercial and cooperative banks under the Negotiable Instruments Act, for the year 2024.All offices under the control of the government will be closed on all Saturdays and Sundays. The notified public holidays will also apply to all state government undertakings, corporations and boards, said an order issued by chief secretary Shiv Das Meena.As per the list, there are six public holidays in the month of January beginning with New Year on January 1. Pongal (January 15), Thiruvallur Day (January 16), Uzhavar Thriunal (January 17), Thai Poosam (January 25) and Republic Day (January 26) are declared holidays.Good Friday on March 29 is a holiday. There are five government holidays in April. They include annual closing of accounts for commercial banks and cooperative banks on April 1, Telugu New Year (April 9), Ramzan (April 11), Tamil New Year/Dr B R Ambedkar’s birthday (April 14) and Mahaveer Jayanthi (April 21).May Day (May 1), Bakrid (June 16) and Muharram (July 17), Independence Day (August 15), Krishna Jayanthi (August 26), Vinayakar Chaturthi (September 7) and Milad-un-Nabi (September 16) are declared public holidays.There are four holidays in the month of October, including Gandhi Jayanthi (October 2), Ayudha Puja (October 11), Vijaya Dasami (October 12) and Diwali (October 31). Christmas on December 25.
