Listen: A November playlist of new music by New Orleans artists
There’s never a shortage of new music from New Orleans artists, and it can be kind of hard to keep track of it all. So Gambit is throwing together a Spotify playlist each month to collect the latest releases by local musicians.
October was a pretty busy month for new music, and November is shaping up to be the same. So far, November has seen debut projects, new singles teasing albums out in 2024 and a posthumous album by prolific rocker King Louie Bankston
Last week, Goner Records released “Harahan Fats,” the first posthumous album from Bankston, who passed away in February 2022 at the age of 49. The roots rock-tinged album is available as a 15-song digital and vinyl release and as a 22-song double cassette. Bankston was constantly writing and recording, so we can expect to hear more from the late musician in the future.
Bands releasing their first EPs and albums this month include intriguing post-punk “electroclash cyborg” Tashi Delay, alt-rock band Rolling Zero and R&B/funk group Extra Extra, led by pianist Anuraag Pendyal. Indie pop outfit Dianella & The Arrows have released their first full-length album,” On the Porch of Dauphine,” and singer-songwriter Sariyah Idan now has her second album, “Glitter & Blood.”
Also out last week, synth-pop band People Museum released “Relic,” their most ambitious — and also their longest — project to date.
Americana pianist-vocalist Lilli Lewis has released a new single ahead of her Righteous Babe Records debut, “All is Forgiven,” out on Dec. 1. Hurray for the Riff Raff’s new single, “Alibi,” heralds their new album “The Past is Still Alive,” out Feb. 23. And Anna Moss, who performs in Handmade Moments, will release her solo album in March. Check out her first single, “Gravy.”
And while I might abide by the rule that the Christmas season doesn’t start until after Thanksgiving, new holiday music from local musicians are starting to hit streaming platforms. Charlie Halloran & The Tropicales are getting a jump start with “Presents for Everyone,” an infectious, tropical-themed collection of holiday music. And singer-songwriter Joy Clark released the heart-warming single “Gumbo Christmas.”
“’Gumbo Christmas’ is a celebration,” Clark says. “It is remembrance and a tribute to my culture and to my late grandmother’s legendary pot of gumbo that would bring everyone together on Christmas.”
Check out all of that and more in this month’s Spotify playlist.
